Baltimore is becoming more bike friendly

Baltimore government officials are making several efforts to help Baltimore become more bicycle friendly since the city’s Bicycle Master Plan was developed in 2006 by the Department of Planning.

Baltimore’s Department of Transportation added 42 bike-lane miles since 2006, and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake received the bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community award from the League of American Bicyclists in October 2010.

The bicycling community in Baltimore has risen by 200.3 percent, although bicycling only makes up about 1 percent of the overall commuters, according to the American Community Survey of 2009.

Baltimore City’s Bike and Pedestrian Planner Nate Evans and bicycle shops create events and different efforts to continue and encourage bicycling to become even more accessible.

These bicyclists have come together to join in something they have evidently formed, the Baltimore bike community.
